Somewhere on the product page, or behind a QR code on the bag, there’s a one-page PDF with a lab logo at the top and a table of numbers underneath. Most people open it, see columns like “LOQ” and “CFU/g,” and close it again. That’s a shame, because the whole thing takes about two minutes to read once you know the layout, and it’s the only hard evidence a supplement buyer ever gets about what’s inside the bottle.
What a certificate of analysis is
A certificate of analysis, usually shortened to COA, is a document issued by a laboratory reporting the results of tests run on a specific batch of a product. It states what was tested, what the results were, and whether each result passed the limit it was measured against.
Three things it isn’t. It isn’t FDA approval; FDA doesn’t approve dietary supplements. It isn’t a certification mark like the ones NSF puts on products after an ongoing audit program. And it isn’t a guarantee about any batch other than the one named on the page.
What “third-party tested” means, and what it doesn’t
“Third-party” means the lab is independent of the company selling the product. A brand that runs its own quality control is doing something useful, but that’s first-party testing, and a report generated in-house should be read as the company grading its own homework.
The other half of the phrase that gets skipped is accreditation. The standard to look for is ISO/IEC 17025, which is the international benchmark for testing laboratories. An accredited lab has had its methods, equipment, and staff competence audited by an outside body, and the accreditation number usually appears on the certificate itself. A report from an unaccredited lab isn’t worthless, but it’s a step down, and a report with no lab name at all is a brochure.
Four things to check before you read the numbers
Start with the lab. Its name, address, and accreditation should be printed on the document, and a quick search should confirm it’s a real testing facility rather than a name the brand invented.
Then find the batch or lot number and compare it to the one on your package. This is the check that matters most. A certificate for a batch made two years ago says nothing about the one you’re holding, and plenty of sellers post a single old report and leave it up indefinitely.
Check the test date for the same reason. Dried plant material changes over time, and a report from eighteen months ago is describing a different product.
Finally, confirm the product name and form match. A COA for a powder doesn’t cover the capsules made from it, since encapsulation adds a step where things can go wrong. If a seller offers one report for an entire product line, that’s a sign they’re treating the document as marketing rather than evidence.
Reading the heavy metals panel
Plants pull metals out of soil, so almost every botanical product is tested for the same four: lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. The panel lists each one with a result, a limit, and a pass or fail. Results are given as a concentration, usually parts per million (ppm) or micrograms per gram, which are the same thing.
Two entries confuse people. “<LOQ” means the metal was below the lab’s limit of quantitation, which is the smallest amount its equipment can measure reliably. That’s a pass, not a missing result. And the limit column isn’t arbitrary: it’s derived from the maximum daily exposure set by USP General Chapter 232, scaled to the product’s serving size. A powder with a large serving gets a tighter concentration limit than a capsule with a small one, so don’t compare raw ppm numbers across products without checking the serving.
Reading the microbial panel
Dried leaf, root, and mushroom products are the ones most likely to carry this section, since they’re harvested, dried, and shipped before anyone controls the environment. The panel reports total aerobic microbial count and total yeast and mold, both as colony-forming units per gram (CFU/g), plus specific organisms like E. coli and Salmonella.
The counts have numeric limits. The specific organisms don’t; they’re reported as “absent” or “detected” in a set sample weight, and “detected” is a fail regardless of amount. If a report shows a count but skips Salmonella and E. coli entirely, the product wasn’t fully screened.
Reading the potency panel
This is the section that tells you whether the product is what the label says. It measures the active compound, or compounds, as a percentage of the material or a milligram amount per serving.
Kratom is the clearest example of why this matters, because its main alkaloid, mitragynine, varies from batch to batch depending on leaf maturity, drying, and season. Two bags with identical labels can differ by a wide margin. A vendor with lab-tested kratom for sale should show a measured mitragynine percentage on each batch report rather than a flat claim, and the better ones set a minimum they won’t ship below. The same logic applies to curcuminoids in turmeric, withanolides in ashwagandha, and beta-glucans in mushroom extracts. If the potency line is missing, the product was tested for contamination but nobody checked that it contains what you’re paying for.
Red flags on a COA
A report with no batch number. A report with no lab name, or a lab that doesn’t exist when you search it. A test date older than a year on a product still being sold. Identical results across several products in the same line, which suggests one report was copied. And a “certificate” that’s clearly a summary table designed by the brand rather than a document from the lab, which is the most common one and the easiest to miss.
A QR code on the bag has turned all of this into a thirty-second check at the kitchen counter. The sellers who added those codes did it because their reports hold up. The ones who haven’t are betting you’ll never ask.
