Some 10 oz. and 100 oz. bars were also marked with serial numbers that can be used to help verify the authenticity of the bar and help focus production dates (particularly valuable for serious collectors).
Engelhard and the 1980 Silver Crisis
No history of Engelhard silver is complete without the Hunt Brothers. In 1979 and 1980. Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbert Hunt attempted to corner the global silver market, accumulating an estimated one-third of the world’s privately available silver supply. Their buying drove prices toward $50 per troy ounce in January 1980, up from roughly $6 just two years earlier.
Engelhard was directly caught up in the events that followed. When silver prices collapsed in March 1980 on what became known as Silver Thursday, Engelhard reportedly negotiated a complex settlement with the Hunts involving large quantities of silver and other assets. The episode illustrated just how deeply embedded Engelhard was in the silver market at its peak, and the bars produced during this era were made against the backdrop of the most dramatic chapter in American silver history.
The BASF Acquisition and the End of Production
The retail bullion business faded away until the 1990s, when Engelhard concentrated on specialty chemicals and industrial catalysts. New Engelhard silver bars were hard to come by at dealers and the secondary market was the main avenue for investors to own them.
BASF, the German chemical company, purchased Engelhard for some $5 billion in 2006, with a particular focus on the company’s catalysts division. For the precious metal investors, it was the official closure of the Engelhard era. Restructured the brand under BASF’s control, no new Engelhard silver bars have been issued since then.
The one event made all of the existing Engelhard bars a finite resource. Today, the real Engelhard bullion is found in private hands, dealers’ stocks, and its long-term collections.
