The most interesting idea behind modular computing is philosophical. It asks consumers to stop viewing a laptop as one indivisible product.

A computer can be fast enough but short on ports. It can have an excellent screen but insufficient storage. It can remain valuable even when one aspect of its design no longer matches the user’s routine.

External connectivity provides a way to repair capability without physically opening the machine. It allows a slim laptop to become expansive at a desk and adaptable on the road. More importantly, it gives users time to replace the computer when its central performance truly becomes inadequate—not simply when they need one more place to connect a cable.

The most sustainable laptop may not be the newest or the most upgradeable. It may be the one surrounded by a thoughtful collection of components that allows it to keep doing useful work.
