Unveiling Filipino Cinema in Amsterdam
Kriterion Theater in Amsterdam is screening 6 renowned Filipino films in the month of October Text and Images by Krisha Valle Kriterion is a student-run film theater and c afé that is located across the University of Amsterdam's Roeterseiland Campus. Since 1945, Kriterion has been a haven for cinephiles as it consistently features acclaimed films from all over the globe. For the month of October, they decided to put a spotlight on Filipino films and host a program named 'Pelikulang Pinoy.' Six distinguished from different decades and genres have been chosen for the ‘Pelikulang Pinoy' program. The film Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay (2011), directed by Antionette Jadaone kicked-off the program. This was a smart choice from Kriterion as the tone of the program has been established by a light-hearted and hilarious documentary of the late and well-loved horror movie actress Lilia Cuntapay . As for the following weeks of October, a new movie will be shown every week on Mondays at 21:00 and Saturdays at 16:30. The coming weeks are going to feature the following movies respectively: Brutal (1980) directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya * Leonor Will Never Die (2022) directed by Martika Ramirez Escobar Manila in the Claws of Light (1975) directed by Lino Brocka Himala (1982) directed by Ishmale Bernal Why is the Yellow the Middle of the Rainbow? (1994) directed by Kidlat Tahimik * Leonor Will Never Die is also included in a different program, ‘Kriterion Previously Unreleased’, and therefore has a different screening schedule as the other films. It will bescreened in the second week of October, the same week as Brutal, on Wednesday at 21:15, Friday at 19:30, and Saturday at 14:30.
